Wedding Planning Timeline: A 12-Month Guide
Plan a Singapore wedding in the order decisions lock each other in: budget, guests, date and venue 12+ months out; photographer, videographer and makeup at 9-12 months; the ROM Notice of Marriage from 6 months out and no later than 21 days before; then details, traditions and confirmations. The ROM notice window is the fixed step.
A wedding plan works best in the order that decisions lock each other in: the date and venue first, then the people who make the day, then the paperwork, then the details and traditions. If you’re starting later than a year out, do the same steps in the same order — just closer together. The one genuinely fixed step is the ROM filing window, so we anchor the timeline to it. These legal steps are for civil marriages registered with ROM; a Muslim marriage is registered through ROMM, which has its own paperwork (a Kadi/Naib Kadi, the bride’s wali and two male Muslim witnesses aged 21+) and a 150-day application validity — see our ROMM guide.
12+ months before: the decisions everything depends on
- Set a budget and a rough guest count together — each shapes the other, and guest count is the biggest cost driver. See how much a wedding costs.
- Choose the date. If auspicious dates matter to your families, check them early; peak-season Saturday slots at popular venues book 12–18 months ahead.
- Decide the shape of the day: ROM and banquet together or separately, and which traditions you’re keeping.
- Book the venue. It fixes the date, capacity and much of the budget, so it comes before most other bookings.

9–12 months before: the people who make the day
- Photographer and videographer — the hardest to replace; book once the date and venue are fixed. A combined photo-and-video package is often better value.
- Attire — decide rent vs buy, and how many looks you want; custom pieces need months.
- Makeup artist and any pre-wedding shoot.
- Read every contract before paying a deposit — see our vendor questions checklist.
About 6 months before: the ROM step
This is the earliest you can file. The Registry accepts the Notice of Marriage up to 6 months before your solemnisation date and no later than 21 days before it. If you want to solemnise at a Registry site, pick an available slot when you file — slots are first-come, first-served and not guaranteed. If you’re marrying at your own venue, invite a licensed solemniser — the Registry suggests doing this 3–6 months ahead — and make sure they accept your invitation through the portal. Choose your two witnesses (both 21+) and gather the identity details the application asks for. The whole process, the fee and where you can solemnise are in our ROM guide; foreign couples should also read the 31-day residency rule.
3–6 months before: details and traditions
- Rings — allow time for sizing and engraving.
- Invitations — design, print and set an RSVP date so the seating plan can follow.
- Traditions and family roles — agree which customs you’re keeping, such as the Chinese guo da li and tea ceremony or, for a Malay-Muslim wedding, the hantaran and akad nikah.
- Hair and makeup trial — book it and plan the morning backwards from the makeup start time.
1–3 months before: confirm, don’t choose
- Final guest list and seating plan.
- Confirm every vendor in writing — times, addresses, contacts and what each delivers.
- Transport, red packets and a day-of coordinator if you’re using one.
- Complete your verification and declaration. Eligible couples (both Singpass holders, first marriage, 21+) can do this online — both parties should sign at least 10 days before the solemnisation; others attend an in-person or approved video-link appointment shown in the portal.
The last two weeks
- Send one final rundown to your emcee, coordinator and every vendor, with a single contact person for the day.
- Confirm the morning’s timings and pack an emergency kit.
- Stop making new decisions — nothing settled in the final 48 hours tends to improve the day.
